The Grand Exhibition of Left-Hand Penmanship featured manuscript samples from soldiers who lost their right arms during the Civil War. Theodore Roosevelt, Sr, served on the awards committee, along with members of the United States Sanitary Commission and the Union League Club. The exhibition, under the direction of Washington's Soldiers and Sailors Union, raised funds for wounded veterans.
